Saint Marsha

Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson was a trans and gay liberation activist who played a key role in the Stonewall uprising of 1969, commemorated by Pride month every June. The rights we in the LGBTQ+ community have today came from the back-breaking work of Marsha and other queer women of color. We owe it all to them.

With the horrendous news of trans women being beaten and killed amid the current Black Lives Matter revolution, I wanted to do something, as an artist, to possibly help. So, this portrait, which had lived only in my head for a number of years, finally came to fruition.

Note: I believe the necklace worn in the original photo this drawing is based on said "Boom Boom," but... I changed it. I don't think she'd mind.

This piece is available on Etsy as a digital download. All proceeds will be donated to a variety of black-led trans and queer organizations via @blackqtfund, which houses a centralized, continually updated list of groups and allows you to donate to some or all of them at the same time. Many thanks to them for their work.
